HELP!!!

On July 28, 2009 University Green interviewed a group known as the Emergency Preparedness group. Their goal was to create a plan for senior citizens to evacuate in case there is a disaster. At the time they were composing slide shows to demonstrate emergency steps. This group has learned how important it was for citizens to be prepared for any kind of emergency.
I enjoyed interviewing this group. Their topic was very interesting.

The Wagner Museum

Today I went to the Wagner Museum with my mentor and co-workers. It was a little weird because I don't really like animals, but after a while I got used to it. None of the displays looked real, but they were. The best part was when we did the scavenger hunt. We had to explore the room and look for the answers.

Portfolio Training

On July 27, 2009 University Green had portfolio training with another group within the BITS program. Because our mentor wasn't here, we had to spend the day with another mentor name Tommy. It was fun. We practiced writing cover letters. It was beneficial to me because I had never written a cover letter before & now I know the importance of having a cover letter.

Work Ready?

Today University Green had portfolio training. It was OK. We were mainly answering questions in a Work Ready packet.We had to work in groups and come up with answers. The best part was when we had to interview the mentors and come up with questions of our own to ask them.

Help Save Energy!

On July 23, 2009 University Green interviewed Energy Audit, another group within the philadelphia youth network. This group mission is to help save energy & do energy audits. An energy audit is an inspection used to see how much energy a building consumes. Interviewing this group helped me learn ways to save energy. For instance, using a surge protector will protect your electronics from voltage spikes, and using a fluorescent bulb will help save money and energy. It was a very interesting topic. I enjoyed it a lot.

Global Warming...

Yesterday University Green watched a movie called Inconvenient Truth. It was by Al Gore. The movie was based on global warming.



There were so many examples in the movie, but the topic that caught my attention the most was the greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases is a gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes Earth's surface, some of it is re-radiated back towards space as heat. Greenhouse gases has made a difference in climate change. Rising temperatures may produce changes in percipatation patterns, storm severity, & sea level.
Although I did not see the entire movie, Ienjoyed what I had saw. I was kind of scared because it made me think that the world was going to end. At the same time, I learned that the movie just wanted people to change their behavior towards the environment.

Bike Temple

This morning my group, PhillyGreen, and I interviewed another group that is in the BITS program known as Bike Temple. Their project is based on getting people to ride bicycles because it is healthier and it saves money. It was very interesting.

A Twitter Lesson

My group & I just got finish teaching a group of children that are friends of the Wissahickon Park how to use twitter. We told them that twitter is another way to advertise and communicate with people. We also showed them a preview of our blog. Then they showed us a preview of their blog. It was nice. Their blog caught my attention because it had music on it.

Mock Trial

Later today my group and I will interview another group that is doing their project on trials. Check out the blog later & I will tell you all about it!!!

Research & Present

Yesterday we had to present our research work to our mentors. My topic was on groundwater depletion. I talked about the importance of it and the cities and states that it effected. I didn't know how important groundwater depletion was until I did research on it. It is very essential for all of us to protect the groundwater because it is a source of water for drinking and irrigation.
Did You Know that Coca-Cola was charged with groundwater depletion & pollution to India?Coca-Cola bottling plants may be taking away groundwater from local villages.
